I was really happy to hear that Abarth cars will continue its support of grass roots motorsport, when they announced that it will be a title sponsor of a leading karting championship in 2011. The karting challenge, which is jointly supported by Abarth Cars UK and SG Petch, the York-based Abarth dealership, takes place at Teesside Autodrome. It will be known as the SG Petch Abarth 2011 Karting Open Championship. This year will be my first time taking part in the karting championship, that’s only because I bought a new Abarth and the sales assistant was talking about it, which got me interested. Abarth will support the series by providing an Assetto Corse 500 race car in which the Championship winner will be offered an official track day test. The motorsport arm of Fiat Group Automobiles UK will also sponsor the end of season prize-giving dinner.
The award-winning Abarth brand has continued to find new fans in the form of enthusiast drivers wishing to express themselves through their choice of car. The range starts at 14,155 (OTR) for the 500 1.4 T-Jet while the Fiat Punto Evo 1.4 MultiAir costs just 16,500 (OTR). Ivan Gibson, head of Abarth UK, said: “Abarth and SG Petch are delighted to be involved in this exciting series as it allows us to support grass roots racing – the heart of everything we do. Teesside Autodrome is a wonderful venue which lends itself perfectly to karting and I’m sure we can expect a fine season of racing there.”
